094: Tips on getting your social media to shine on Giving Tuesday

We’re spending more than two hours a day scrolling through our social media feeds. Algorithms are becoming more sophisticated, showing us content that we’re likely interested in — even if it’s from accounts we’re not following.

With major year-end giving days coming up in Q4, social holds immense potential to not only engage our most loyal supporters but also acquire news ones who might share our mission and values.

In this week’s brief, we’re highlighting all things social media so that you can fine-tune your strategies to have a successful (and disruptive-free) fundraising season.

Snackable snippets

Giving Tuesday resources for nonprofits 📖
As you prepare for one of the biggest giving days of the year — Giving Tuesday — our team has compiled a comprehensive resource guide to help you reach and exceed your end-of-year fundraising goals.

From campaign timeline templates to multichannel strategy by sector, this guide has everything you need for each step of the process.

Social media is a powerful tool for connecting with everyday donors, yet the authors of “One Click to Give: Future Proof Your Fundraising” argue that nonprofits aren’t utilizing it to its full potential.

Because donors are already spending a lot of time on social, nonprofits that do well to engage them over time can convert them into sustained givers. Authors Nick Black and Jeremy Berman share recommendations on how to strengthen these connections.

Staying ahead of Facebook fundraising changes 📖
There have been quite a few changes to Facebook fundraising recently. Two of these include stopping and removing fundraising tools from the European Economic Area and transferring payment processing to PayPal Giving Fund.

If you’re still confused, Katrina VanHuss breaks down what these changes mean for nonprofits and gets insider insights from the pros.

Is influencer activism the new brand activism? 📖
The latest research from Sprout Social finds that 87% of consumers agree that influencers should speak out about causes that align with their values.

With more demand for influencer activism and a desire to meet consumer expectations, this could impact brand partnerships. This holds the potential to open up more opportunities for nonprofits to collaborate with influencers who have shared interests in their mission.

What to know about Apple’s new pop-up blocker 📖
Apple is testing a new Safari feature called “Distraction Control” that lets iPhone, iPad, and laptop users block pop-ups on websites. If this makes it past beta testing, this will prevent your website pop-ups from appearing to users who enable this feature.

So, what can you do? Check your data to see how many of your visitors use Safari, and consider using less intrusive pop-ups to avoid triggering the feature.

In the news

A federal judge has ruled that Google illegally monopolized the search market and ad revenue through questionable deals. While Google intends to appeal, if unsuccessful, the outcome could potentially lead to the breakup of the company

This decision could have far-reaching implications, not just for Google but for the entire ad industry, though any significant changes may take months or even years to materialize.

Reddit reported $253.1 million in ad revenue in the second quarter. While it’s modest compared to the $38.3 billion brought in by Meta, it’s still a 41% bump from the same quarter last year.

However, advertisers want the platform to do more. As Carly Carson, Head of Integrated Media at PMG, says, “We are hoping to see Reddit continue to expand its mid- and low-funnel capabilities to help brands drive immediate conversion outcomes.”
